The Order of the Daughters of the King
The Order of the Daughters of the King (DOK) is an order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church, Churches in communion with it, or Churches in the historic episcopate but not in communion with the Episcopal Church. Today our membership includes women in the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA) and Roman Catholic churches.
Members of the DOK undertake a Rule of Life, incorporating the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. By reaffirmation of the promises made at Baptism and Confirmation, a Daughter pledges herself to a life-long program of prayer, service, and evangelism, dedicated to the spread of Christ’s Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish.
The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapter of the DOK at Holy Apostles, chartered in 1999, is 37 members strong, making it one of the largest chapters in the Diocese of Alabama. Our meetings usually consist of dinner, followed by a business meeting and a program.
Our members maintain a confidential prayer list, and pray daily for those whose names appear on it. Parish members can complete a prayer request form and place it in the prayer box, both of which are located in the narthex at the church.
Our “Meals on Wheels” ministry is very active. We cook and deliver meals to members of the parish who are recovering from an illness, a surgery, or who are in need of this ministry for any other reason. Prayer shawls are often given to parish members and others as a comfort and a sharing of God’s Peace during a serious illness. Our members are active participants in the Holy Apostles Lunch Outreach (HALO) program. Other ministries are undertaken during the year as requested by the rector.
Before becoming a member of the DOK you must complete a program of study or discernment process. These classes are facilitated by chapter members and are usually conducted in January or February. If you wish to talk with someone who can provide you with additional information about the DOK, please contact the office at Holy Apostles at 205-988-8000.
